Point 12 What I need to include in my film and opening sequence to match the genre.

In order to make my piece of film convincing as an independent music film I will need to make sure that the opening sequence matches the genre. After watching the beginning of the independent music film, "Begin Again" I began to understand what traits I will need to include. The opening sequence must use natural or warm yellow light to create a chilled and realistic atmosphere. The characters must be dressed in normal clothing that isn't too fancy. It must reflect how they are only beginning their journey into the music industry. Within most independent films there also seems to be a love interest and I believe this will help to define my genre. The music must be good and represent the mood of the film at that point in time. As the pace builds up so must the music. For example in the start of "Begin Again" the music begins to speed up and increase when the characters names begin to scroll across the screen and the first opening minutes have already been established. Due to the fact that the genre is about music it is important that the soundtrack is very strong. The opening sequence must also include minimal talking and more actions as the credits are presented on the screen. It also allows the scene to be set and the story to begin being unfolded.

Point 11 Independent Film Research

  • Use of a small budget to film the movie.
  • Storyline is strong and unique, unlike any other type of movie.
  • The techniques used should include a sense of risk and you should be willing to take a risk in  the making of the movie.
  • Often good actors end up starring in independent film to truly master and show their full ability in an independent piece.
  • The characters within the movie are the main focus and so it is important that they have strong features.
  • It is a film like any other but produced without the help of any other major film studio or company.
In order for my work to look convincing it is important that I try out new techniques within the storyline and filming of the piece. The piece must be edgy and representative of an independent and alternative audience who will be observing the film. A sense of grit and realism is also very importantin independent films. It must be clean and not covered in thrills as it must be realistic and a gritty piece.

Point 8: Jelly Baby Task (With Lego)

The first scene is a dream sequence shot over the shoulder of the main protagonist who is performing on stage. The audience is lively and full and trying to get close to the barrier. This shows what the main character wishes was true and it is still unknown to the audience that it is only a dream.
The second shot is the main protagonist lying in bed with his guitar lying at the bottom. The allows the audience to now see that it was all a dream. It is a high angle shot and I chose this shot as it shows the character coming down from his dream state.
The third shot is off the character sitting on the side of his bed in realisation that it was only a dream strumming on their guitar. It is a long shot that shows the characters solitude in the room and the lack of his dream world.
This shot shows the protagonist and their bandmates sitting around a table using a wide, eye view shot. It shows the band getting ready for their gig later on and going over the music.
Finally this wide shot of the band on stage shows the reality of the protagonists dream, even though it is on a much smaller scale. This shows how much further the band has to get through the film before the protagonists dream comes true.

I found this task beneficial in enabling me to further think about the way I wish to orchestrate my video. It allowed me to think about the camera angles and the main storyline and the way I wish to present the characters.

Point 8: NEW Genre - Independent Film

I have decided to start working by myself as I want to change the genre that I am going to base my coursework on.
The genre I have chosen is 'Independent Film' as this is my personal favourite and I want to learn more about the filming techniques and background of the genre.
Independent film is a great way to explore new filming techniques. You are able to present stories the way they are with no sugar coating. I am excited to start exploring independent film and the way I can present the storyline through the mis en scene.
